Allardyce described the Merseyside official's decision "diabolical" and said: "I've tried my best to keep my mouth shut about officials but I can't do it any more.
"The bottom line is that he was poor and the sending-off was diabolical.
"He did not take the conditions into consideration. If Gardner had two bookable offences then we and Birmingham should have ended with six players each on the pitch.
"Did the referee think it was going to be a blood-bath because there were two sides at the bottom playing each other?
"It was never like that and there was nothing in the tackles from both sides."
