"We have made a number of offers for a number of players," Allardyce told the club's website.
"I have resisted spending money on some player I could have bought to play in midfield because that would have taken away from the money that would have been available.
"When we missed Andy Johnson I wanted to keep the vast majority of that available for the ultimate goalscorer, if I could find it.
"I am speaking to two front men that are very interesting, as far as I am concerned. Talks are at an advanced stage and negotiations are progressing nicely without feeling too confident."
Meanwhile, Bolton are confident of completing the signing of the Iranian midfielder Andranik Teymourian although a work permit could hold the deal up.
