"I would have liked his progress to have been a lot quicker. We all expect instant success but that's virtually impossible," Allardyce told Sky Sports News.
"Integration into our society and our team and getting the whole of his family life together has been a huge operation for him and us.
"Now that has been all cleared up and his injuries have cleared up, I feel some of the brilliance he has in his locker will start coming out.
"He showed in 30 minutes on Monday he is getting there and I am sure his skill will start to show on a regular basis."
Okocha is likely to return to the starting line-up against Birmingham City on Saturday after an impressive display when coming off the subs bench in the game against Sunderland on Monday evening.
