Needing a win to stand any chance of catching leaders Manchester United, Arsenal's world caved in when Tamir Cohen's injury-time goal gave Bolton a dramatic 2-1 win at the Reebok Stadium.
Without a trophy in six seasons, the Gunners are now nine points behind United and Wenger insisted: 'I pick the team so if anybody is to blame it is me. I choose the players and for me they have had an outstanding attitude all season.'
Horror show: Arsene Wenger can't bare to watch as Arsenal throw away their title dream
Even though Arsenal meet United at the Emirates in the Barclays Premier League next Sunday, Wenger feels his players now have an impossible task.
He said: 'We have to continue to fight. But we dropped too many points in this game. It is all very frustrating to get just two points from our last nine but that has been the story of our season.
Disgust: Arsene Wenger throws a ball in anger as his side let their title chances slip away
'It is hard to lose a game like that when you look at the goals we have conceded. The players are not to blame. They gave everything.
'We feel the potential is there but we are in a job where you have to take your chances and be realistic and we still lack something like maturity and experience in important situations.'
Bottled it: A water bottle feels Wenger's frustrations as the winner is scored
Despite dominating possession, Arsenal's shortcomings were exposed as man of the match Daniel Sturridge headed Bolton into the lead just before half time.
Wenger grumbled that Bolton reserved the performance they should have given against Stoke in the FA Cup semi-final last Sunday for this match but he accepted defensive frailty had cost Arsenal dear.
1-0: Daniel Sturridge celebrates the opener
'In games like this, it is important not to go 1-0 down,' Wenger said.
'We came back to 1-1 and had the chances to score. We gave so much physically that in the end we did not have the concentration to stop the corner.'
Enough to make you tear your hair out: Wenger's anguish is plain to see
Sturridge, a boyhood Arsenal fan, has been a revelation since joining Bolton on loan in January and this win means his parent club, Chelsea, are now the only side that can halt United.
He was more concerned with the lift it gave Bolton following that 5-0 Wembley defeat.
Winner: Tamir Cohen beats Johan Djourou to the ball
'I have watched the Gunners and I do like the way that they play,' he said.
'I have done my team (Chelsea) a favour but I am just happy to go and work hard for these fantastic fans.
Resigned: Wenger trudges off at the final whistle
'After last week's result we wanted to show them we had the passion. We were very unhappy with the performance last week and we wanted to show that it was just one bad day.'
The game ended in acrimony as Robin van Persie, who scored Arsenal's goal, and Bolton's Matty Taylor were involved in an angry confrontation after the final whistle as frustrations boiled over.
