MATCH PREVIEW

This was Stoke's first Premier League fixture following promotion in 2008, and though the Potters were beaten 3-1 they have since gone on to establish themselves in the top flight using the Bolton blueprint - direct, high-tempo football, solid home form and effective set-pieces.

We are moving forward and showing there is more than one dimension to our play

Bolton boss Owen Coyle

Owen Coyle, who is trying to make the current Wanderers side a little easier on the eye, has this week defended Stoke boss Tony Pulis following criticism from Fulham's Danny Murphy. The midfielder named Pulis as one of three managers who are to blame for their side's reckless tackling, but Coyle insists "no manager instructs his players to go and try to hurt opponents".

In-form striker Johan Elmander scored his first Bolton goal against Stoke on the opening day of the 2008/09 campaign, but struggled to find the net regularly in his first two seasons at the Reebok. The Swede says the man management skills of Coyle helped him belatedly find his feet, complaining that former boss Gary Megson used to "stare and scream at me".

A fortnight ago, Stoke's Jon Walters netted his first Premier League goal against Blackburn, the club where he started as a trainee, and the forward will hope to repeat the trick against another former side on Saturday.

Walters left Rovers' youth set-up to sign his first professional contract with Wanderers but was allowed to leave in 2004, having not started a single league game for the club.
