Candela's Italian Return

Vincent Candela seems likely to be playing his football back in Italy from next season after Bolton Wanderers conceded defeat in trying to keep the French defender for a further year.

Udinese are offering the former Roma full-back a route back to the Serie A league, and the prospect of a return to Champions League football next term is sure to whet the appetite of the 30-year old.

Meanwhile Candela's former national team-mate Laurent Robert has yet to complete his move to the Reebok despite a premature announcement from agent Willie McKay.

Newcastle chairman Freddie Shepard had admitted that Robert had been allowed to speak to Bolton but claimed that a deal was still no nearer to completion amid reports this afternoon that Portsmouth could be set to put in a rival bid.

"We have given the player permission to talk to Bolton, but we have not agreed a deal with Bolton," said Shepherd
