"We cast aside three points against Aston Villa here and we cast aside another three points against Liverpool," said Allardyce.
"We wanted to make sure today we got back to winning ways after drawing three and losing one of the last four. To stay in the top reaches of The Premiership that couldn't continue.
"Under the circumstances it was probably our biggest victory this season, not only from a performance point of view, but also from a numbers point of view.
"We were absolutely threadbare today and the injury to Khalilou Fadiga early on put us into more trouble and we had to adapt and shuffle the team around. They mastered it exceptionally well."
Mexican Jared Borgetti scored his first Premiership goal and Allardyce was delighted with the striker's contribution.
He added: "It's everything in terms of what we want him to do and what his game is.
"He is not an outside the box man, he is an inside the box man. We worked all week on if he was to play down the middle, against Dunne and Distin, we couldn't play through that way.
"We had to play on the diagonal and down the sides. The first goal today was a great move and it was also a tremendous performance from Kevin Davies.
"Now Borgetti is off the mark I hope it is one of many goals. He had scored in all the cup competitions, but not in The Premiership, so it was very important for us."
