The Perth team face Motherwell at Hampden Park in the Scottish Cup semi-final and Coyle will be there in spirit.
Coyle, 44, spent two years with Saints before moving to Burnley in 2007 and is pleased with the way his successor Derek McInnes has taken the club on.
He said: "I spoke to Derek this morning and he and Tony Docherty (assistant manager) have done a fantastic job. These are exciting times.
"We are a big gang together and I am looking forward to the game. We are all hoping for a victory.
"Motherwell will be tough opponents as they are flying at the moment. The manager Stuart McCall is a pal of mine - there are so many tie-ups. But St Johnstone are fired up to reach the final. If they do that it will be a marvellous feat for all concerned."
