Their battling qualities were evident as they kept Wolves' attacks at bay for 53 minutes and then responded to Michael Kightly's opener for the hosts with Martin Petrov's penalty (63) and further goals from Marcos Alonso (80) and substitute Kevin Davies (84), rendering Matt Jarvis' late strike a consolation.
Reflecting on the display, a delighted Coyle said: "We had to stand up and be brave and resolute in our defending, in the first half in particular. Wolves came out with all guns blazing as we expected. For our part, we did allow too many crosses into the box, but when they came in we had to get blocks in and Adam Bogdan made a couple of great saves."
He added: "When we did pass and move the ball in the first half - which wasn't often enough - we had a couple of half-chances ourselves, but when we went in at the break at 0-0, I was absolutely delighted if the truth be told.
"Then Kightly scored a great goal and at that point - given the events of the last few weeks, the amount of games we have had to play and the emotion - it would have been easy to feel sorry for ourselves.
"But what we did was show the true spirit we have at the football club. As managers we often talk about team spirit and a sense of camaraderie and that is easy when you are winning games week in and week out.
"We have not won enough games this season, which is why we are where we are in the league, but that (performance) was testament to how tight a group they are.
"They bounced back in the game, Martin Petrov finished the penalty - which was a penalty - and from that moment on we were really in the ascendancy with the football we played. We scored three goals, but if the truth be told, in that second half we could have added a few more to it.
"To go the goal behind but still bounce back with the character they showed - I think that speaks volumes not only for their quality, but for that sense of togetherness they have got."
