Former Bolton Wanderers midfielder John Sheridan has been appointed joint caretaker manager at Lancashire neighbours Oldham Athletic following Iain Dowie's decision to quit the Latics and return to Crystal Palace as manager.
Sheridan was a vital member of the Bolton squad which won the Division One championship in 1997 after joining the club from Sheffield Wednesday lending his experience to the side as they made a return to the Premiership, however upon the Trotters relegation in 1998 he was given a Free Transfer after almost two years at the club and found his way to Oldham as a player-coach via a spell at Doncaster Rovers.
In the spring of 2003 he decided to hang up his boots after an illustrious career which saw the Stretford-born player serve no fewer than seven clubs and win over 35 caps for the Republic of Ireland, however a player shortage at Boundary Park at the start of the season lead to him re-registering as a player.
Now he takes on a new chapter in his 21-year career as he takes his first steps into management where he will joined by another veteran in the former Blackpool, Burnley and Preston North End player David Eyres as the duo look to handle team affairs until a successor is appointed to Dowie.
