Holden's recent Carling Cup outing at Aston Villa was his first appearance since March, when a tackle from Manchester Untied's Jonny Evans left him with ligament damage.
And the United States international's comeback has proved short-lived, with doctors opting to carry out a follow-up procedure on the damaged joint.
Owen Coyle told the Wanderers website: "Our prime concern has always been Stuart's welfare and his long-term health and fitness.
"It was looking likely that the operation could be scheduled for next summer, but after follow-up consultations with the specialists we have brought the date forward."
Holden, who arrived from Houston Dynamos in January 2010, was one of Bolton's most consistent performers last season until his injury.
