Holden was on the brink of a return at the weekend - they lost 1-0 to Manchester City - but Coyle decided against it.
Coyle said: "There had been a little reaction and because of the size of the squad we could not afford to have Stuart Holden missing for four or five weeks.
"I need all my players mentally tuned and knowing they are at their best. There was a little nagging doubt in his mind that his thigh would not last the pace of the match."
