The midfielder is available from Dutch giants Feyenoord and has been in talks with clubs about a return to the J-League.
However, Dutch reports state Ono wants to continue his career in Europe and is keen to join countryman Hide Nakata at Bolton next month.
Trotters boss Sam Allardyce fancies a six-month loan deal for Ono, who has only just returned from an Achilles injury.
Allardyce said, "He is a player we'd be very interested in.
"If we could get him on a loan deal then that would be very nice but I'm sure his club will want a fee."
