Warhurst, who was released by Wanderer's at the end of last season, has worked under Robins boss Danny Wilson and coach Frank Barlow when at Sheffield Wednesday.
"Paul was at Sheffield Wednesday with myself and Danny, so we've known him for a long time," Barker told the Bristol City official website.
"He could always play anywhere from attack to defence, though we'd be looking at a midfield role for him should he be willing to come.
"I'm unaware of the latest situation but talk that he is on the verge of signing is way off of the mark. We've spoken to him and that's on-going."
