On 14th July the club return to competitive action with a friendly against Scottish side Dundee United at an as yet unconfirmed venue but the game against the Tangerines can not come too soon for some people.
The summer has been dominated with news of transfer targets, the latest being Aston Villa's distinctive striker Peter Crouch but the sooner we get back to action on the field the better. Speculation often raises hopes amongst supporters about their potential new signing, the other week one tabloid linked us to Nicky Butt and this spread like wildfire on the world wide web. Obviously those of us who failed to be fooled by this report realise that an England international on big wages would be out of our reach but some reporters in the press can take full blame for raising expectations.
Friendlies against Radcliffe Boro, Bradford City, Oldham Athletic, Chesterfield, Sheffield Wednesday and Real Zaragoza are planned over the next few weeks and each one represents and entirely different test. Hopefully we will enter our first league game against Charlton a month from now in a better manner than we have done in the last two opening fixtures - both of which ended with us losing by a heavy defeat. Our early season form last year was perhaps the kick we needed to push on to achieve our best ever finish, another season similar to the last will do very nicely.
I await the first whistle of our pre-season programme.
