Bolton Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce has confirmed he is interested in signing Sunderland defender Emerson Thome, hopefully before this weekend's game with Blackburn Rovers.

“We are trying our best to bring in new personnel. The most likely one to succeed is Emerson Thome" the former Blackpool and Notts County boss admitted

“We will try our best to complete it as quickly as we can. There are the usual financial problems but we haven't lost it yet. So we will keep pushing on and see what the outcome will be.”

“I don't really know what his fitness levels are like. I won't really be able to find out until we complete the deal.”

Allardyce has been searching for a new defender all summer following the departures of Gudni Bergsson, Mike Whitlow, Paul Warhurst and Colin Hendry at the end of last season and he sees former Sheffield Wednesday defender Thome as an ideal signing.

Ibrahim Ba also remains a target for the Wanderers boss but he admits that again a deal would be dependant on the financial package and whether or not the limited funds he has to work with will strech to a second player.

“We've had some preliminary talks with his agent about a financial package.

“That's to be discussed at more length with the chairman (Phil Gartside).

“Then we will see what the position is. If we think it is right, we will have a go.”
