New Bolton Wanderers coach Ricky Sbragia has thanked Sir Alex Ferguson for releasing him from his contract.
The Manchester United manager thought highly of Sbragia’s work at Old Trafford following his move from Sunderland, yet he didn’t block his path when he wanted to try his luck at Bolton.
"I had three tremendous years at Manchester United as a coach but I always wanted to be a first team coach," Sbragia told Sky Sports. "The opportunity came at Bolton so obviously I had deep thoughts about it and accepted the offer.
"He [Ferguson] spoke to me regarding it and obviously wanted me to stay but he could understand why I wanted to leave. He was very considerate with that side of it and gave me the two options.
"But I felt, deep down, it was the right time to have a go at first team level and I'm grateful to him for letting me have that chance and releasing me."
