Paul Warhurst has admitted that it came as a surprise to be invited back to play for Bolton Wanderers but the veteran utility player has said he is keen to take the fresh opportunity which Sam Allardyce has given him in the hope of earning himself a deal.

The 33-year old was released by the club over the summer only to be invited back by Allardyce yesterday who has given the experienced former Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers player a second chance to prove himself at the Reebok Stadium following a catologue of injury problems.

"I kept in touch with Sam Allardyce during the summer and knew he'd been keeping tabs on my situation, so after noticing that I hadn't got myself fixed up with a new club. He invited me to come along for two weeks training with the squad. The phonecall came as a pleasant surprise" he said.

He also stressed that he hadn't yet signed a contract with the club but was hopeful of returning to Bolton on a more permanent basis.

"I've not signed a contract with the club, but if i prove my fitness over the coming days then i'm hopeful that I could once again become a Bolton Wanderers player. I'm not taking anything for granted, but so far I feel good and I'm hoping to make my stay here a more permanent one" he added
