American forward Johann Smith helped himself to two goals with defender Bradley Hill also managing to get on the scoresheet for the second time in just over a month.
Hill struck a rather scrappy opener on 50 minutes when firing past Caig from close range following a defensive scramble but it was well deserved as Bolton had pressed throughout the game.
On 78 minutes the second Wanderers goal finally came as the pacy striker Smith beat Magpies defender Liam Atkin to the ball to find the net from just inside the area and this was quickly followed by a Wanderers third some sixty seconds later as the young Connecticut-born flier Smith made good use of a calculated midfield pass by Dale Whitehead to beat Caig once more.
Daryll Smyllie had two late attempts to bring the visitors back into the game but he found Bolton's debutant Al-Habsi in top form as the Oman international made two fine saves.
