Bolton Wanderers are still seeking their first win of the season after Charlton mounted a blockade at the Reebok Stadium.
Jay-Jay Okocha hit the bar and Youri Djorkaeff saw a shot cleared off the line as Wanderers looked to spark their season into life.
Charlton looked comfortable for most of the game and were happy to soak up much of the pressure although in the first half when they could have taken a decisive two-goal lead had it not been for a timely tackle by Nicky Hunt followed by a good save from Jussi Jaaskelainen.
It was a different story in the second half, however as Wanderers kept up a sustained sequence of attacks, while Kevin Davies had what looked to be two good penalty claims turned down.
Apart from those two first-half chances Charlton never seriously threatened after that giving Wanderers' new signing from Sunderland, central defender Emerson Thome, a quiet debut.
Wanderers, took the game to Charlton from the start in the hunt for goals but resolute defending and too many hopeful long balls made sure Dean Kiely did not have too much to worry about in the Addicks goal.
The only time he was beaten in the opening half came in the eighth minute when Okocha slammed a 25-yard curling free-kick against the angle of the crossbar and post.
Other than that, Charlton seemed happy to soak up anything the home side could offer although Wanderers midfield man Ricardo Gardner could claim to be unlucky when fortune threw himself in front of a goalbound piledriver.
Although much of their play was confined to breakaways, the London club engineered the two best chances of that half.
Scott Parker being foiled in the six-yard box by a Hunt tackle following Jason Euell's astute pass while Jaaskelainen was forced to produce a diving save to knock away a threatening effort from Matt Holland just before half time.
Wanderers introduced Greek international Stelios Giannakopoulos after the break and his speed down the right certainly caught the Charlton defence off guard, but Davies was unable to take advantage.
It was Giannakopoulos, however, who almost broke the deadlock on 68 minutes as he cut in from the right only to see his shot diverted for a corner by Kiely.
And the referee then enraged the home crowd, denying Davies two penalties as he went down under the challenges of first, Scott Young and then Jonathan Fortune in the space of two minutes.
That at least fired up Wanderers in front of goal and a renewed period of pressure ended with Kiely again saving his side when he pushed a Djorkaeff round a post.
And again Djorkaeff looked to have scored when he pushed the ball past Kiely and towards an empty net in the 79th minute only for Herman Hreidarsson to scamper back and clear off the line.
