Bolton Wanderers bad start to the season eased a little with a useful point over Charlton Athletic at the Reebok Stadium, however they should of had all three having hit the woodwork through Jay-Jay Okocha and having a Youri Djorkaeff effort cleared off the line late on.
Referee Alan Wiley was handing out yellow cards for fun in a game which although not a dirty one was spoiled by some very dubious officiating and spoiled what was potentially a good contest.
Okocha could of given the Wanderers the perfect start on seven minutes when his free kick rattled the underside of Dean Kiely's crossbar in the Charlton goal to fire an early warning to the Addicks.
However it was a game of few chances, On 20 minutes Scott Parker found himself clean through on goal but a last ditch tackle by Bolton defender Nicky Hunt prevented the former England U21 player from giving the London side the lead.
Ricardo Gardner was quickest to react to a Youri Djorkaeff pull back but such was the amount of bodies defending in the Charlton area that Jamaican saw his shot sail wide. Matt Holland could of opened the scoring at the other end but his shot was well saved by Wanderers keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Bolton introduced Greek International Stelios Giannakopoulos in place of the underperforming Henrik Pedersen at Half Time and the former Olympiakos man's introduction to the team seemed to lift Bolton in what was a very drab game.
The last twenty minutes was when the game really came to life, Giannakopoulos saw his long range effort sail past Kiely's post and within the space of a couple minutes Kevin Davies had two Penalty appeals turned down by Wiley following fouls by Luke Young and Jon Fortune.
Djorkaeff had a couple of half chances to keep up his decent scoring record against the Addicks but on 78 minutes he could of broken the deadlock. After some dogged determination he rounded Kiely only to see his shot cleared off the line by Hermann Hreidarsson.
Charlton introduced both Jonatan Johansson and Kevin Lisbie to try and spice things up but in the end neither side deserved to win in what was a poor game. For Bolton it could be classed as a useful point against an organised team but on the other hand it was a perfect opportunity to get all three points in front of their home fans especially with the late surge.
