Kevin Davies third goal of the season five minutes from time was enough to give Bolton Wanderers a share of the points as bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers proved to be very hard to break down at the Reebok Stadium as the first top flight battle between the two sides in 23 years ended in a 1-1 draw.
The West Midlands club, who had only one point and one goal before today's game had frustrated the Lancashire side in the first half by not allowing them to play and they took a shock lead on the half hour mark when out of the blue Scottish midfielder Alex Rae netted a fantastic strike when he volleyed past Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen following a headed clearance by Bruno N'Gotty to open the scoring.
Prior to the opening goal, the games chances where very few and far between. Former Spurs striker Steffen Iversen shot over from 30 yards for David Jones side in the opening minutes and former Manchester United ace Paul Ince tested Jaaskelainen in the Bolton goal with a couple of long range efforts whilst both Kevin Davies and Henrik Pedersen had chances for the home side, the Pedersen chance in particular was denied only by a smart save from Michael Oakes in the Wolves goal.
The second half saw Bolton up their game in the search for an equaliser and the introduction of both Mario Jardel and Per Frandsen from the substitutes bench was the start of some continuous pressure by the Trotters. A succesion of corners saw Emerson Thome and Jardel both go close for the equalising goal.
However at the other end the returning Kenny Miller could of added a second after a mix up in the Bolton defence which saw Kevin Nolan clear the Scottish international's lob from off the line to spare his goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen who had come galloping out of his area.
Michael Oakes was then on hand to save the away side again when he reacted well to Jay-Jay Okocha's shot. Thome again could of netted the equaliser but once again Oakes tipped over the downward header by the former Chelsea man.
Bolton introduced on loan winger Glen Little for the closing stages of the game and it was a substitution which paid off. A chipped cross by the Burnley player five minutes from the end found Davies who was on hand to fire the ball past Oakes to give Bolton a deserved share of the spoils.
