Bolton Wanderers made it three wins in three last night as a goal in each half was enough to defeat a young Sporting Lisbon team 2-1 at the Estadio Municipal Del Rio.
The home side were without a number of their star names but managed to put in a creditable performance against their English opponents with recent loan signing Hugo Viana in the crowd following his move back to Portugal from Newcastle United.
Bolton player of the year Kevin Davies was to have the Wanderers first chance of a relatively quiet first half when he fired over the crossbar on 35 minutes failing to trouble Tiago in the Lisbon goal.
Midfielder Carlos Martins gave Sporting the lead on 42 minutes when he combined well with Tinga to put the ball past the Wanderers goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen but the Trotters were soon back on level terms when trialist Hassan Kachloul capitalised on a mistake by Miguel Garcia.
The two sides made a number of changes at half time with Bolton giving second half run outs to trialists Cyril Rool and Sherjill MacDonald who had both joined the Lancashire club this week in a bid to earn a contract having fallen out of favour at Lens and Anderlecht.
Referee Pedro Enriques had no option but to dismiss Bolton striker Michael Bridges on 57 minutes after the former Sunderland and Leeds United striker appeared to lash out at defender Parai.
Henrik Pedersen secured victory for the Trotters shortly after the hour when he combined well with fellow striker Kevin Davies on 63 minutes to ensure Bolton kept up their fine pre-season record, however this was to be the last action of the game for the Danish international who was replaced by trialist Rool.
Substitutes Yannick Djalo and Joao Moutinho tried to bring the home side back on level pegging late on but where unable to find a way past the Bolton defence which once again saw a solid performance by the ex-Real Madrid defender Julio Cesar.
